Q: Rights-managed? Royalty-free? I’m new to licensed images. Where do I find out about these terms?
A: See the Picture Licensing Universal System (PLUS) site glossary.
Q: I’m a well-established professional photographer. Will licensing my images cheapen my work?
A: Licensed images have come a long way since the beginnings of commercial stock photography. Veer is an industry-leading and award-winning licensed photography agency. Our commitment to seeking out the best photographers and images is fundamental to meeting the needs of our audience, primarily designers and other creatives.
Q: What kind of images are you looking for?
A: The ideal Veer image is a perfect blend of artistic originality and commercial viability. Our three brands address the full spectrum between these seemingly disparate criteria - from highly practical images to images that push the boundaries of licensed photography.
Q: Who are Veer’s clients?
A: Veer provides images and other visual elements to the publishing, advertising, and design industries. We target designers and other creatives who appreciate and actively search for highly original commercial imagery.
Q: Once I am accepted as a contributor, how do I get started with a project?
A: For rights-managed collections, contributing photographers gain immediate access to our comprehensively researched biannual macro briefs. For our royalty-free collection, specific shoots are assigned to appropriate photographers based on our quarterly shoot plan.
Q: What are your criteria for accepting or rejecting specific images in a shoot?
A: Images chosen by our editors often meet at least two of several criteria: technical excellence, commercial viability, aesthetic relevance (“freshness”), and artistic originality.
Q: How long does it take for accepted images to be available online?
A: Final submissions go through an arduous quality control process in order to ensure that uploaded images meet the highest standards in the industry. From receipt by Veer of final High Resolution selects this process takes from 60 to 90 days. Contributing photographers can track their submission by requesting a submissions report online.
Q: Do you want to see my fine art or editorial photography?
A: Yes. Although we are primarily looking for commercial imagery, the stylistic boundaries between commercial, fine art, and editorial photography are blurring. Just like commercial and fine art photography, you would need to provide model and property releases and all images would require exclusivity in distribution.
Q: I have a specific project in mind? How do I go about submitting it?
A: Once accepted as a contributing photographer, you can submit project proposals on the web, or by contacting your assigned art director.
Q: If I am approved as a contributing photographer, are the samples I provided automatically accepted?
A: No. Initial or pre-acceptance samples are for review purposes only, and are meant to give us a sense of your style, subject matter, and allow us to check the images for quality.
Q: What part of a relationship with Veer is exclusive?
A: Unless otherwise specified, Veer’s standard Contributor Agreement establishes a non-exclusive cooperation between Veer and the photographer. However, the images supplied to and selected by Veer for marketing (“Selected Images”) are represented by Veer for the term of the agreement on an exclusive basis. The specific terms are spelled out in the Contributor Agreement.
This image exclusivity may be somewhat modified for photographers contributing to our rights-managed brands who wish to have their images available to them for art, book, or other self-promotional, non-commercial projects.
Q: What is your compensation structure?
A: Our compensation structure differs from case to case and from one brand to another. It runs from complete buyouts of images and image collections to royalty arrangements.
Q: How long do you take to review submissions?
A: Depending on the availability of an editor or art director, you can expect to be contacted in one to three weeks.
Q: Are there any fees to the photographer?
A: Apart from a minimal shipping and scanning fee for film or print submissions, no.
Q: Do you accept digital submissions?
A: Only if you use a professional digital camera or digital back with a minimum uninterpolated image file size of 31MB or higher; 8-bit RGB TIFF. This uninterpolated file size benchmark can only be achieved with a digital camera supporting 11 megapixels or greater - a full-frame image size of 4064 x 2704 pixels. Please send samples for review.
Q: Does Veer provide a wants list?
A: Contributing photographers have access to a tightly edited and frequently updated wants list, in addition to access to our themes and trends database and listing of unclaimed RF shoots.
